Philippians: Finding Joy Right Where You Are
This past Sunday, we kicked off our new series in the book of Philippians. Here is where we are headed and what topics we will be discussing in the coming weeks!
Week 1 - August 2 - Introduction - Acts 16
One expects to find Paul depressed and troubled but instead you find him joyful and abounding in gospel work. Paul writes these encouraging words from a prison cell described in Acts 16. In this introductory message, we will discover what led to Paul’s rejoicing in the Lord.
Week 2 - August 9 - Finding Joy In The Journey - Philippians 1:1-11
All of us are on a journey and God is faithful to finish what He started. Paul is encouraging the church in Philippi to find joy in the journey as they grow in love, knowledge, and discernment.
Week 3 - August 16 - Finding Joy In Suffering - Philippians 1:12-18
Finding joy in our suffering is all about seeing our set backs as set ups. While many of us want to avoid suffering at all cost, our suffering is one of the ways God grows us spiritually and advances the gospel.
Week 4 - August 23 - Finding Joy In Death And Life - Philippians 1:19-26
If you are still alive, you have work to do! Paul’s life is not about seeking his own comfort or satisfaction. It’s all about seeking the advancement of the Kingdom of God. To live is to continue in the work God has for him. To die is to depart and be in Christ presence.
Week 5 - August 30 - Finding Joy In Unity - Philippians 1:27-30
Joy is found in following Jesus together. Paul is encouraging the church in Philippi to stand together and fight for unity. Their unity will give them strength and courage to stand against any opponents to the gospel.
Week 6 - September 6 - Finding Joy In Humility - Philippians 2:1-4
The path to joy is not waiting on everyone else to center their lives around you. Joy is found in considering others and thinking of ourselves less.
Week 7 - September 13 - Finding Joy In Serving - Philippians 2:5-11
The path to joy is through sacrificial servanthood. While Jesus had every right to stay comfortably where he was, his love drove him to a position of service and sacrifice.
Week 8 - September 20 - Finding Joy In Obedience - Philippians 2:12-18
God has called us to not begrudgingly follow him but to joyfully hold onto the word of life as we walk in obedience. We can rejoice in God’s empowering presence at work in our lives.
Week 9 - September 27 - Finding Joy In Spiritual Family - Philippians 2:19-30
Paul didn’t operate alone. Paul had a spiritual family that served him, served alongside him, and modeled the servanthood of Jesus. This spiritual family cares for one another, heals one another, and carries each others burdens. Joy is found in not walking this journey alone.
Week 10 - October 4 - Finding Joy In Temptation - Philippians 3:1-11
We are not taken out of this world of temptation, but we are kept in it for our good. Through temptation we discover that only Christ can satisfy every longing and that nothing compares to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ.
Week 11 - October 11 - Finding Joy When Your Stuck - Philippians 3:12-21
Our journey in Christ is one of progression not perfection. Paul encourages us to find joy in what lies ahead as we pursue the finish line. Our future hope and citizenship in heaven gives us joy in the present.
Week 12 - October 18 - Finding Joy In Conflict - Philippians 4:1:3
We have all experienced relational conflict and know what a source of pain this can cause. Seeking reconciliation and encouraging unity should be sought in our pursuit for joy. Paul encourages the reconciliation of two women but also speaks of their gospel partnership and labor alongside him.
Week 13 - October 25 - Finding Joy In Anxiety - Philippians 4:4-9
Making a stance for joy is waging war against worry. Paul clearly outlines what a disciple should do when anxiety attacks.
Week 14 - November 1 - Finding Joy In Contentment - Philippians 4:10-13
The secret to living a joyful life is trusting that God will provide his presence and strength no matter the circumstances.
Week 15 - November 8 - Finding Joy In Giving - Philippians 4:14-20
As Paul suffered in prison, his joy is stirred by the generosity and financial partnership of the Philippians. Paul reminds the Philippians that their giving is actually for their benefit and greatest joy.
Week 16 - November 15 - Finding Joy In The Everyday - Philippians 4:21-23
All that Paul addresses in this letter is meant to be lived out in the everyday as they walk the streets and greet one another. He closes the letter by using a similar phrase from his introduction, but focuses on the grace of the Lord being “with” them. This use of the word “with” should remind us that as we go, we are never alone!
